The Dakotas-Minnesota Area communications team received eight awards from the United Methodist Association of Communicators (UMAC) at the organization’s virtual awards celebration at the end of May.
The team includes Director of Communications Christa Meland and Communications Specialist Karla Hovde from the Minnesota Conference, and Director of Communications Doreen Gosmire and Communications Associate David Stucke from the Dakotas Conference. For the past eight years, the two conferences’ communicators have collaborated to maximize their collective skills and more effectively tell the stories of Dakotas and Minnesota United Methodists. Several of the award-winning pieces were collaborative efforts.
Members of the secular media served as judges for the contest and selected the winners from hundreds of submissions. The awards recognized the achievements of communicators within annual conferences, general agencies, and local churches for materials completed between Nov. 1, 2018 and Oct. 31, 2019. Their entries bore witness to the passion and dedication each UMAC member brings to the ministry of communication. Each organization was limited to one entry per category this year, creating more intense competition than previous years.
Work was submitted across 10 classes of communications, with a best in class for each, as well as first, second, and third place winners selected for each category. The Dakotas-Minnesota communication team received the following awards in the Annual Conference/Local Church Division:
