Land Acknowledgement Statement
Six sessions: Mondays 7-9 p.m. via Zoom,
Minnesota is the ancestral home of the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations. A land acknowledgement is a formal statement that recognizes and respects indigenous peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between indigenous peoples and their traditional territories.
Journey with this group to write a meaningful land acknowledgement statement while taking part in a transformative journey. Participants will reflect together on
  • The connection between land acknowledgement statements and our identities as Christians.
  • Why it is important to write such statements.
  • How a land acknowledgement statement can impact our path as disciples of Jesus Christ who are committed to the transformation of the world.
  • Who we can become as we take the work of land acknowledgement seriously.
  • What steps beyond land acknowledgement statements we might take.
We hope this journey will impact the way you walk on this sacred land. And your relationship with all of creation, both human and non-human. This journey is specific to United Methodist theology and practice but is applicable to other Christian faith traditions.
Individuals or groups from churches or other organizations are welcome to participate. Zoom sessions for all participants will be accompanied by small group breakout discussions. For the breakout group portion, participant groups from the same church or ministry can opt to have the discussions in their own setting. Please note that registered participants will have access to Zoom recordings of the sessions they cannot attend, so don't let having to miss a session deter you from signing up.
Each participant will need to purchase the book On This Spirit Walk by Henrietta Mann & Anita Phillips and download a guidebook. Cost $15 for all six sessions. No one will be turned away.
Presented by Debra Collum & Cathy Velasquez Eberhart and other Hopeful Earthkeepers
