Rev. Woojae Im, a clergy serving the UMC of Peace in Richfield and a delegate to 2020 General Conference, invites you to an Ethnic/Cross-Cultural/Multicultural clergy gathering.

As you all know, our communities are getting very diverse and yet our faith communities don't know how to reach "new" people. At the same time, we have consistently been battling with the issue of racism. At the last annual conference, annual ethnic/cross-racial luncheon group got together and came up with a statement (see below). The statement was well-received by the body of the annual conference, and now it needs to be developed with concrete action plans.

I am inviting you to a fall gathering, and your presence and voice do matter. We want to see positive changes in our annual conference regarding racism. There shouldn't be any camps in terms of evangelical/conservative and progressive in battling with this specific form of injustice and oppression. Here's info you need:

When: Sept. 16, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., a free lunch will be provided.
Where: Minnesota Church Center (Assembly Rooms #1 and #2), 122 West Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, MN
Agenda:
1. Definition of Racism
2. What's Next?
3. Organizing Leadership

We will try to set up the video conferencing for those who can't attend the meeting in person. Please email Rev. Woojae Im at im.woojae@gmail.com if you are interested in this option.

RSVP: Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we know how much lunch to provide. Please email Rev. Woojae Im with your confirmation at im.woojae@gmail.com.

Annual Conference Satement (Revised)

The Minnesota Annual Conference made huge strides towards being the inclusive church yesterday. However, Minnesota Annual Conference needs to respond passionately to marginalized ethnic groups. We acknowledge that we should put our constant effort to remove systemic racism within the Minnesota Annual Conference and its member churches.

As persons who have been consistently harmed and traumatized by this racism, our ethnic community of the Minnesota Annual Conference submits that we need the following:
  1. The Minnesota Annual Conference to acknowledge that systemic and individual racism exists within the conference and its member churches.
  2. As members of marginalized ethnic groups, we want Minnesota Annual Conference to have sacred reverence and compassion for marginalized ethnic groups.
  3. All clergies, especially Cross-cultural appointments, and congregations in the Minnesota Annual Conference should receive formal training and education from an accredited and competent trainer/educator sourced from outside of the Minnesota Annual Conference.
  4. The Minnesota Annual Conference mandates that every church evaluate their intercultural competencies, sensitivities, and racial discrimination, in order to deal with the pervasive reality of Post - Traumatic Stress symptoms often suffered by Clergy and ethnic church members.
