Lake Harriet UMC is excited to announce a panel discussion on race and racism in the Twin Cities with three of the contributors to the Minnesota Historical Society Press book, A Good Time for the Truth.

Editor Sun Yung Shin and authors Shannon Gibney and Carolyn Holbrook will read excerpts from their book, share their experience, and respond to questions. This event is free and open to the public—invite family and friends!

Sun Yung Shin is the editor of A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota, the author of poetry/essay collections Unbearable Splendor; Rough, and Savage; and Skirt Full of Black (all from Coffee House Press), a co-editor of Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption, and the author of bilingual illustrated book for children Cooper’s Lesson. She is a full-time educator and since 1995 has made her home in Minneapolis.

Shannon Gibney is a writer, educator, activist, and the author of See No Color, a young adult novel. Her writing has appeared in Al Jazeera America, The Crisis, Gawker, and other venues. A Bush Artist and McKnight Writing Fellow, she lives with her family in Minneapolis.

Carolyn Holbrook was a 2015 recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative grant. She was named a 2015 Change Maker by the MN Women’s Press for “More Than A Single Story,” her series of panel discussions at the Loft Literary Center on black women writers of the African Diaspora living in Minnesota. Her personal essays have been published widely, most recently in A Good Time For The Truth: Race in Minnesota and Blues Vision: African American Writing from Minnesota (MNHS Press).
