The Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church is looking for an experienced volunteer coordinator for the United Methodist General Conference gathering in May 2020 at the Twin Cities Convention Center. General Conference of the United Methodist Church is a quadrennial gathering of over 3,000 United Methodists from around the world. Each General Conference is where pre-determined United Methodist delegates wrestle with today’s issues and vote on the United Methodist Church’s official denominational policies. In 2020, Minneapolis, MN was chosen to host General Conference and is responsible for gathering and training volunteers for this event.
The volunteer coordinator will be responsible for recruiting, training, and implementation volunteer management strategies and best practices in order to make each General Conference attendee feel as though Minnesota is their home away from home. In order to create that experience, the volunteers will be with the attendees every step of the way from landing at MSP airport, transportation services, special services, and while they are at the Twin Cities Convention Center during General Conference. The Minneapolis Host Team is creating a culture that is “kinder than necessary” and expects the volunteer coordinator to extend that culture to the volunteer and the system that he/she creates.
This position is a short term, 18-month, compensation contracted position with a travel expense budget.


January 1 – April 1 2019
Part Time Hours

  • Begin working at the Minnesota Annual Conference offices in downtown Minneapolis.
  • Train and become an expert with the volunteer management software, INIT Live.
  • Create volunteer job descriptions in partnership with MN Host Team.
  • Design volunteer training systems for general volunteer training as well as site specific volunteers such as but not limited to airport volunteers, transportation volunteers, onsite registration, and hotel etc…
May 2019 – December 2019
Part Time +
  • Attend the Annual Conferences of the Dakota’s and Minnesota to help in volunteer sign up and recruitment.
  • Travel around Minnesota and Dakotas in order to recruit volunteers.
  • Coordinate communication strategies to implement general volunteer training guidelines, including the use of INIT Live.
January 2020 – June 2020
Full Time, Full Time +
  • Recruit volunteers to fill specific shifts
  • Design volunteer site specific training with detailed duties
  • Oversee training plans.
  • Manage volunteer management tool.
  • During General Conference this position is responsible for managing the volunteers on a day to day basis which will require stamina and thoughtful problem-solving skills.
  • Follow through after the event to complete records and recognize volunteers
  • Recruiting Volunteers.
  • Designing and Implementing a Volunteer training program.
  • Using a volunteer management online tool and training others to use it.
  • Managing volunteers for an event with 3,000 + attendees.
  • Flexible availability and schedule from January 1 2019 – June 30 2020.
  • Willingness to extend an open mind to individuals that hold differing religious, moral, or cultural practices.
  • Willingness to learn about the United Methodist Denominational structure and theological beliefs in order to help in recruiting volunteers.
  • Experience with INIT Live Volunteer Management System.
