Coon Rapids UMC launched its first Matthew 25 free food distribution on Sunday, Jan. 10 to help meet the needs of people in the surrounding communities. Everyone is welcome and there are no screening requirements. With about 70 volunteers on-site, we were overwhelmed by the turnout and filled with gratitude that we could provide this service to so many. We anticipated 100, initially prepared for 300, and served 600 families. In a little over an hour, we had run out of food.
Matthew 25 is a component of the Spirit River Foundation, a nonprofit 501c3 organization, originally established in Isanti County. We feel so very blessed to have been able to initiate this service in Anoka County during a pandemic and with minimal financial resources. God is good! We plan to continue offering shelf-stable food supplied by Every Meal (fka Sheridan Story) along with supplemental non- perishable food. We also hope to obtain perishable food from area businesses. The free food distribution will occur every month on the second Sunday.
We realized quickly that we will need additional food sources to better fulfill the needs of our community. We are seeking faith communities that would consider partnering with Matthew 25 to assist with monthly food collections, pray for the volunteers and attendees, and help promote the food distributions. Also, if you or your members have any connections that might help us find potential food donations/suppliers, we would love the help. Whatever level of involvement your members could provide would be greatly appreciated.
