The General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) announces a national search and invites inquires and applications for the Director of Civil and Human Rights position. GBCS seeks a highly skilled professional to lead the programmatic team to advance civil and human rights and fight human rights abuses in the U.S. and globally for all persons regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, ability, socio-economic status, or sexual and gender identity. The ideal candidate must have the ability to manage a dedicated team and work closely to represent The United Methodist Church’s positions on civil and human rights in the United States Government, the United Nations, and with other policy and decision-makers.
GBCS is dedicated to the work of living faith, seeking justice, and pursuing peace. Located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and in New York City, New York, GBCS is the social justice and public policy agency of the denomination and is responsible for seeking the mandate of The United Methodist Church, the implementation of the Social Principles with an outward facing presence and witness in society.
The Director of Civil and Human Rights is responsible for implementing programming and developing legislative advocacy strategies in support of identified agency priorities including immigration and global migration; criminal justice reform; the rights of LGBTQIA people; the rights of Indigenous Peoples; advancing disability justice; protecting religious freedom; and advancing free and fair elections. The preferred candidate must be a highly skilled and creative leader with experience in the US Congressional process.
- Manage and develop GBCS’s legislative and policy advocacy to advance United Methodist positions in support of Civil and Human rights. Working as a strategic thought partner and collaborator with United Methodist faith and secular coalitions to develop and implement strategies that advance identified agency priorities.
- Connect with United Methodist leaders in Annual Conferences, UMC General Agencies, and other networks to educate, equip and mobilize actions in support of identified Civil and Human Rights priorities.
- Monitor policy developments and research civil and human rights issues to communicate timely information and action opportunities to GBCS networks and broader United Methodist and other audiences.
- Practice and promote Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility values within the team and across the organization.
- Manage the unit’s budget; support fundraising efforts to secure additional resources for advocacy efforts.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to the major issue areas is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
- 4 to 6 years of relevant experience developing and advancing issue advocacy strategies, including fluency and familiarity with social change movements.
- 2 to 4 years’ experience managing staff, with a track record of cultivating high-performing and inclusive teams.
- Experience with the US Congressional process or other relevant legislative processes strongly preferred.
- Experience in member-based organizations and/or in grassroots activism preferred.
- Strong creativity and strategic thinking skills, including ability to connect and unify cross-functional strategies for issue advocacy including communications, lobbying, research, campaigns and organizing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong diplomatic skills used to influence others, resolve problems, manage projects, or achieve appropriate solutions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong team management, leadership development, and facilitation skills. Highly collaborative style.
- Ability to handle a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
- Strong commitment to building and working with diverse teams.
- Computer training sufficient to research using internet sources.
- Ability to travel, internationally and domestically, approximately 10-15% of the time, or as needed.
- Residence in Washington D.C. is required.
