The United Methodist Church of Anoka is working hard to develop a culture of engaging every church member in the ministries so we might be as effective as possible in making disciples of Jesus Christ and bringing hope to the community! “Discipleship” includes engaging followers of Jesus in a variety of ways, providing opportunities for learning and serving others, and teaching and empowering followers how to invite others to do the same.
We are especially interested in providing dynamic and exciting ministries and opportunities to engage kids and families and people across generations. The person in this position will begin with a particular focus on ministries with kids and families, and assess the effectiveness of ministries already being offered in other areas and with adults of all ages, while helping to "pull it all together" alongside the pastor and other staff. Experience in and an affinity for Christian Education may be helpful, a passion for engaging the neighborhood and community will be important, and an openness to innovate and try new things will be invited and welcomed!
The Discipleship Ministries Coordinator will work with the pastor and leaders across ministries with people of all ages to help discipleship to happen. Work an average of 20 hours each week, with the flexibility to adjust work schedule according to the needs and demands of the role.
Duties:
- Partner with the pastor to develop lay person ministry teams that will lead and implement discipleship initiatives across all ages. Includes coordinating opportunities for people to engage, learn, serve, and invite others as disciples of Jesus!
- Partner with the youth ministries coordinator to design, develop and deploy discipleship opportunities for youth grades 6-12.
- As appropriate, select, contribute to or create discipleship curriculum or resources.
- Ensure a variety of opportunities to serve others.
- Regularly evaluate programming and events.
- Attend and participate in church activities that will promote connection and communication about the discipleship areas. This includes being present to build relationships on Sunday morning.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related field, e.g., Christian Education; child development; missional ministries; Education
- Capable and gifted disciple-maker and mentor, leader and communicator
Required
- Professes Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
- Model standards of discipleship including a personal devotional life, worship attendance, serving, small group/learning participation and inviting others to follow Jesus
- Relationship-focused
- Knowledge of age-appropriate faith development
- Ability to listen to and communicate with people of all ages
- Ability to identify, build and deploy discipleship strategies, opportunities and curriculum across all age demographics
- Ability to lead teams and effectively participate as a member of a team
- Ability to recruit, train and deploy volunteer layperson teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Goal-oriented
Preferred
- Previous hands-on experience working with discipleship ministries
- Background or interest in Wesleyan in theology and practice or willingness to learn
- Capable and gifted disciple-maker and mentor, leader and communicator
- Track record of successful recruiting/equipping/deploying lay person teams
