Good Samaritan UMC in Edina is a progressive and reconciling congregation with a strong tradition of music excellence. Due to Covid-19, worship has been primarily virtual since March 2020. We are seeking an organist to provide musical leadership as we return to our regular worship service starting in September 2021.

The organist is central to worship but will also coordinate with other groups such as the chancel choir, the contemporary band and the handbell choir. This position will accompany the chancel choir, which will include Wednesday evening practice and Sunday morning worship. It may also include accompanying soloists, and the rehearsal times may be more flexible. The organist may also be asked to provide music for weddings or funerals and will be compensated separately for those.

Good Samaritan’s Moller pipe organ has 24 ranks and 3 manuals.

Good Samaritan will consider local candidates and is unable to compensate for relocation or travel.

Duties:

  • Provide music leadership at the 10 a.m. worship service, both individually and by accompanying the Chancel Choir or other ensembles.
  • Participate in regular conversations with the senior pastor or music coordinator to confirm music for 10 a.m. worship service and special services (Ash Wednesday, Christmas Eve, etc.).
  • Rehearse with the choir once during the week and briefly before worship.
  • Maintain regular connections with the chancel choir director.
  • Provide music for weddings and funerals upon request.
  • Collaborate with the handbell choir, contemporary band, soloists or other music groups.

Qualifications:

  • Music degree preferred but not required.
  • Has studied organ or piano and has commensurate experience as an organist in worship.
  • A good sight reader.
  • Able to rehearse with the chancel choir on Wednesdays and Sundays (and other special services) before worship, as well as soloists or ensembles as needed. 
  • Has adequate time to prepare for worship.
  • Able to coordinate with the chancel choir director and other staff as needed.
  • Familiarity with Methodist worship format preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to relate to other people, listen well and respond appropriately to feedback.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, accomplish tasks on time, and be flexible when needed.
  • Self-motivated.

Compensation:
Commensurate with experience.
