Director of Children and Family Ministries

First United Methodist Church in Austin is seeking a person who has the gifts to invigorate, develop, and lead ministries for children and families. The successful candidate will have a teacher’s heart and an ability to partner with lay leaders to create opportunities for children and families to connect and grow deeper in their faith.

Sunday Mornings

  • Coordinate and lead Sunday school for children pre-k through fifth grade (September through May when school is in session)
  • Attend worship twice per month in the summer; prepare and lead children’s messages, as requested
  • Supervise nursery coordinator
 Wednesday Nights 
  • Coordinate and lead Wednesday evening activities for children pre-k through fifth grade (September through May when school is in session)
  • Identify small group resources for families to grow in faith
 Special Events/Other
  • Coordinate and lead special events on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights (e.g., Rally Day, third grade Bibles, Farmer John’s Pumpkin Patch, Christmas Pageant, Easter Eggstravaganza, Valentines event)
  • Coordinate children’s participation at early Christmas Eve service (e.g., a song or story)
  • Coordinate and participate in summer vacation bible school or other summer offering
  • Coordinate periodic family/intergenerational events (e.g., nature center, snow tubing, bowling)
  • Encourage children and family participation in camping ministries
  • Participate in Children’s Ministries Team meetings
 Relational, Organizational, Administrative, and Other
  • Relate with children and families
  • Identify, develop, and equip lay leaders and Children’s Ministries Team
  • Become and remain proficient in United Methodist curriculum for children’s ministries
  • Communicate events and activities
  • Maintain database for children and young families
  • Administrate safe gatherings training for volunteers with children
  • Maintain classrooms and educational space with lay leaders


  • Experience teaching or working with children
  • Strong team building skills to identify, develop, and equip leaders
  • Tech savvy and experience with Zoom and social media communication
  • Self-starter
  • Post-secondary education preferred
  • Supportive of the theology and values of First Church
  • Pass background check

average 10 hrs/wk, $18.00/hr
