Hamline UMC in St. Paul is seeking a full-time director of student ministries. The purpose of the director of student ministries is to facilitate all aspects of Hamline Church’s ministry to children & youth (K-12) and their families. The position requires professionalism and confidentiality as well as exceptional oral and written communication skills, and a passion for young people’s spiritual growth and development.

Duties:
Education and Spiritual Formation

  • Design, develop, and implement innovative and effective regular and occasional educational, spiritual, service and social events that facilitate the vision and values of Spiritual Formation within children, youth and their families. 
  • Work with the pastor, associate minister and Spiritual Formation Team to plan curriculum, programming, and missions.
  • With companion staff members and laity, providing intergenerational opportunities which thoughtfully involve young people of both the children and adolescent life stages.
  • Provide spiritual formation and family/parental development resources and opportunities along with associate pastor for spiritual formation. 
  •  In partnership with the lead pastor and pastor of discipleship, serving as a mentor and counselor for children, youth, and their families and maintaining an accessible referral list of professional counselors.
 
Leadership and Administration
  • Diligently manage the schedules, events, physical resources, and organizational needs of children and youth ministry.  This includes all supplies, physical spaces, budgeting, communications (social media), and scheduling events and volunteers.
  • Build relationships with families and the church through strong communication utilizing the best medium for each stakeholder group (ie church newsletter, email updates, website, social media, etc.) (Stakeholder groups include: children, youth, parents/guardians, volunteer leaders, church staff, larger church family, and the community.) 
  • Managing safe sanctuary policies, researching and updating practices annually, partnering with all ministry leads to educate families and the church community, training leaders and staff, and ensuring compliance with local, state, federal, and conference mandates.
  • Supervise nursery staff and interns as called upon.  
Vision and Creative Programming 
  • Research, develop, identify and make available educational resources that will be used within children and youth ministry, as well as providing resources and opportunities for families in faith and development that can encourage spiritual formation in the home.
  • Implementing and leading faith milestones as a pathway for discipleship from birth through graduation. Collaborating with the rest of staff to plan the celebrations of milestones. 
  • Developing a calendar that includes annual faith-strengthening experiences for each life stage outside regular weekly programming. This calendar should be adaptable, fresh, and not grow stale, routine, or predictable. 
 
Building Relationships & Bridges 
  • Identify, recruit, train, envision, and nurture the volunteers, teachers and leadership teams or all ministry spanning birth through high school graduates. 
  • Guiding operational oversight and creative planning of ministry with children (birth-6th grades), investing in teammates who invest in the children. 
  • Holding direct leadership of ministry designed for youth (7th-12th grades), being one of several mentors who work directly with youth. 
  • Creating pathways for and actively inviting families in the community to participate in the life of the larger church 
  • Providing diverse pathways for individuals with various skills to serve with children and youth, in roles that are both behind-the-scenes and in direct connection to families 
 
Additional Expectations:
The overarching expectation is that the DSM will be known amongst children, youth, and families, as well as by other stakeholders and leaders, by being present in the following ways
  • Active participation and leadership in the Sunday worship service and church events.
  • Be present in the community and at events important to children, youth, and families. 
  • Invite and engage other leaders, forming supportive teams, so as not to be the sole holder of all ministry knowledge nor the lone leader responsible for carrying out the work of the ministry.
  • Attendance and participation is expected at Sunday Worship, holiday worship, Staff Meetings (currently Tuesdays 12:30), a weekly one-on-one meeting with supervisor, monthly meeting with Lead Pastor, Spiritual Formation team meetings (monthly), and occasional Church Council Meetings or other meetings as needed. 
  • Consistent office hours each week Monday-Thursday, between the hours of 9am-4pm.  Schedule is flexible to be determined in consultation with supervisor. 

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in children’s ministry or youth ministry and church leadership. Clearly communicate his or her Christian faith.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Religious Studies or related field. 
  • Pass a criminal background screening
  • Work Sundays, Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter and occasional additional events like retreats or mission trips. 
  • Receive and maintain necessary CPR and First Aid Certifications
  • Complies with all aspects and policies of the Hamline Church United Methodist Personnel Policy

Compensation:
$45,000-$55,000 - Salary commensurate with experience and education. Benefits include 403b contribution, paid vacation time, and available continuing education funds. Health insurance negotiable.
