First UMC in Austin is seeking a person who has the gifts to invigorate, develop, and lead ministries for children and families. The successful candidate will be tech savvy, and able to pivot, as needed, between in-person and virtual ministry. He/she will have a teacher’s heart and an ability to partner with lay leaders to create opportunities for children, youth, and families to connect and grow deeper in their faith.
Duties:
Sunday Mornings
- Coordinate and lead, as needed, Sunday school for children pre-k through 5th grade (September through May)
- Assist pastor with weekly pre-recorded children’s time (for pre-recorded service)
- Attend worship twice per month in the summer; prepare and lead children’s messages, as requested
- Supervise nursery coordinator
Sunday mornings, September-May: 9:00 am to 11:00 am (when school is in session)
Sunday mornings, June-August: 9:15 am to 10:45 am (two Sundays per month); schedule determined in consultation with pastor
Sunday mornings, special events: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm
Wednesday Nights
- Coordinate and lead, as needed, Wednesday evening activities for children pre-k through 5th grade (September through May)
- Identify small group resources for families to grow in faith
Wednesday evenings, September-May: 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm (when school is in session)
Special Events
- Coordinate and lead, as needed, special events on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights (e.g., Rally Day, 3rd Grade Bibles, Farmer John’s Pumpkin Patch, Easter Event)
- Coordinate and lead, as needed, the annual Christmas pageant
- Coordinate children’s participation at early Christmas eve service (e.g., a song or story)
- Coordinate and participate in summer vacation bible school or other offering
- Coordinate periodic family/intergenerational events (e.g., nature center, snow tubing, bowling)
- Encourage children and family participation in camping ministries
Vacation Bible School, one week in the summer, half-day: Monday-Thursday
Intergenerational/family events: Variable hours
Relational, Organizational, Administrative, and Other
- Relate with children and families
- Identify, develop, and equip lay leaders and Children’s Ministries Team
- Become and remain proficient in United Methodist curriculum for children’s ministries
- Communicate events and activities
- Maintain database for children and young families
- Administrate safe gatherings training for volunteers with children
- Maintain classrooms and educational space with lay leaders
Planning, preparation, organization, and administration: Variable hours
Qualifications:
- Experience teaching or working with children
- Strong team building skills to identify, develop, and equip leaders
- Tech savvy and experience with Zoom and social media communication
- Self-starter
- Post-secondary education preferred
- Supportive of the theology and values of First Church
- Pass background check
Compensation:
Salaried with job log, $8,000/year
