Youth Director

First UMC in Austin is seeking a person who has the gifts to invigorate, develop, and lead vibrant and innovative ministries for youth sixth to 12th grade. The successful candidate will have the ability to engage youth and create a safe space to explore questions of faith and life.

Wednesday Nights  

  • Lead Wednesday evening faith-based activities and conversations with youth (September through May when school is in session); activities might include service projects, reflective lessons, gratitude practices, and/or engaging games
  • Assist with confirmation, as requested
Sunday Mornings 
  • Lead Sunday school for youth twice per month (September through May when school is in session); schedule determined in consultation with the pastor
  • Attend worship services twice per month June through August; participate in worship as requested; schedule determined in consultation with the pastor
  • Seek ways to involve youth in worship, as requested
Special Events 
  • Develop, plan, and lead four special events for youth and/or families (e.g., Lock-in, The Event, Snow-tubing)
  • Support Sunday morning and Wednesday evening special events that involve families and youth (e.g., Rally Day, Farm John’s Pumpkin Patch, Christmas Caroling)
  • Plan a summer youth mission trip in coordination with the pastor; assist with fundraisers, if needed; attend if schedule permits 
  • Involve youth as leaders or participants in mission projects and/or intergenerational events
  • Encourage youth participation in camping ministries 
Relational, Organizational, and Other
  • Relate with youth and families
  • Identify, develop, and equip youth and adult leaders
  • Become and remain proficient in curriculum for youth ministries 
  • Communicate events and activities (e.g., social media, postcards, text messages, website page, bulletin, newsletter) 
  • Maintain database for youth ministries
  • Meet regularly with pastor (monthly) and lay leaders/volunteers
  • Administrate safe gatherings training for volunteers with youth
  • Attend continuing education
  • Maintain youth room with custodian 


  • Experience teaching or working with youth
  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective relationships with laity and staff
  • Strong team building skills to identify, develop, and equip youth and adult leaders
  • High energy, spiritual maturity, and leadership skills
  • High-level organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft office and social media
  • Post-secondary education preferred
  • Supportive of the theology and values of First Church 
  • Pass background check, driver’s license
            Wednesday evenings, September-May: 5:15-7:15 pm (when school is in session)
            Sunday mornings, September-May: 9:00-11:00 am, two Sundays per month (when school is in session); schedule determined in consultation with pastor
            Sunday mornings, special events that involve youth: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
            Sunday mornings, June-August: 9:15-10:45 am, two Sundays per month; schedule determined in consultation with pastor 
            Youth/intergenerational events: Variable
            Planning, preparation, organization, and administration: Variable

$4,800 per year
