Coordinator of Children and Family Ministries

First United Methodist Church in Austin is seeking a person who has the gifts to invigorate, develop, and lead vibrant and innovative ministries for children pre-K through fifth grade. The successful candidate will have a teacher’s heart and an ability to equip and resource lay leaders. He/she will partner with the congregation to encourage faith in our children and to provide an environment that is nurturing, safe, faith-filled, and fun. Average 10 hours per week.

Sunday Mornings 

  • Coordinate and lead, as needed, Sunday school for children pre-k through 5th grade (September through May when school is in session) 
  • Include a music rehearsal in the Sunday morning schedule (with lay leaders, as needed); have children sing or ring bells about 5 times per year in worship; involve children in worship, as requested
  • Attend worship twice per month in the summer; prepare and lead children’s messages, as requested 
  • Supervise nursery coordinator 
Wednesday Nights  
  • Coordinate and lead, as needed, Wednesday evening activities for children pre-k through 5th grade (September through May when school is in session); activities might include a craft, game, lesson, and song; include a music rehearsal (with lay leaders, as needed)
  • Identify small group resources (e.g., book study or parenting class) for families to grow in faith; invite and encourage participation  
Special Events 
  • Coordinate and lead, as needed, special events on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights (e.g., Rally Day, 3rd Grade Bibles, Farmer John’s Pumpkin Patch, Halloween Event, Christmas Caroling at Nursing Home, Valentine’s Party, Easter Event, Summer Event)
  • Coordinate and lead, as needed, the annual Christmas pageant  
  • Coordinate children’s participation at early Christmas eve service (e.g., a song or story)
  • Coordinate and participate in summer vacation bible school or other offering
  • Coordinate family/intergenerational events (e.g., bowling, snow tubing, rec center) 
  • Encourage children and family participation in camping ministries 
Relational, Organizational, Administrative, and Other
  • Relate with children and families 
  • Identify, develop, and equip lay leaders
  • Become and remain proficient in United Methodist curriculum for children’s ministries
  • Communicate events and activities (e.g., social media, postcards, text messages, website page, bulletin, newsletter) 
  • Maintain database for children and young families
  • Meet regularly with pastor (bi-monthly or monthly); attend monthly staff meeting, if schedule permits 
  • Facilitate Children’s Ministries team meetings
  • Administrate safe gatherings training for volunteers with children
  • Attend continuing education
  • Maintain children’s worship bags, class rooms, and educational room with custodian and lay leaders
  • Update bulletin boards with lay leaders
           Average 10 hours per week
            Sunday mornings, September-May: 9:00 am to 11:00 am (when school is in session) 
            Sunday mornings, June-August: 9:15 am to 10:45 am (two Sundays per month); schedule determined in consultation with pastor 
            Sunday mornings, special events: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm
            Wednesday evenings, September-May: 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm (when school is in session)
            Vacation Bible School, one week in the summer, half-day: Monday-Thursday 
            Intergenerational/family events: Variable
            Planning, preparation, organization, and administration: Variable


  • Experience teaching or working with children
  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective relationships with laity and staff
  • Strong team building skills to identify, develop, and equip leaders
  • High energy, spiritual maturity, and leadership skills
  • High-level organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft office and social media
  • Post-secondary education preferred
  • Supportive of the theology and values of First Church
  • Pass background check 

$8,000 per year
