Taking Heart Open Houses Intern

Taking Heart Open Houses are held during Ramadan and bring Muslims and people of other faiths together for conversation and an Iftar, the fast-breaking meal.

In 2019, Ramadan begins the evening of May 5 and lasts until the evening of June 4. During that time a series of Open Houses will be held at mosques and Islamic centers, mainly in the Metro area, but a few in greater Minnesota. The intern assists with laying the groundwork for these events and their coordination, mainly in the areas of communication and administration.

Position Description:  Taking Heart Open Houses are held during Ramadan and bring Muslims and people of other faiths together for conversation and an Iftar, the fast-breaking meal.  In 2019 Ramadan begins the evening of May 5 and lasts until the evening of June 4; during that time a series of Open Houses will be held at mosques and Islamic centers, mainly in the Metro area, but also in greater Minnesota. The intern assists with laying the groundwork for these events and their coordination, mainly in the areas of communication and administration.

This unpaid Internship will run from March 1 to July 1 and requires three-five hours of work per week. Most work can be done from home if preferred.

Supervision: The intern will work collaboratively with the Taking Heart Organizer, and also with the Communications Director and other MCC staff people as needed.

 

Duties:

  • Become familiar with Taking Heart’s history and procedures
  • Set up registration program on MCC website
  • Post registration link and relevant articles to the MCC’s Taking Heart Facebook Page
  • Adapt/design and send invitations to past participants using Mail Chimp
  • Target churches and other faith communities in the locations of participating mosques; adapt/create publicity material such as bulletin and newsletter announcements, fliers
  • Contact institutions of higher learning in area and find contact people for special student outreach/learn of websites, newsletters, etc.
  • Research local media sources and media contacts: newspapers, online media, radio, online community calendars; submit dinner events to online calendars
  • Edit and maintain current press release documents; email press releases to media contacts
  • Track all media articles and calendar posts in spreadsheet
  • Attend and assist with registration at some of the Open Houses
  • Collect and maintain lists of contacts and participants for Taking Heart
  • Send pre-Iftar and post-Iftar participant surveys using Survey Monkey
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Background in comparative religion recommended
  • Knowledge of Islam, or willingness to learn
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in English
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve
  • Flexibility, good humor, and perseverance
  • Comfort with use of various social media platforms
  • Comfort with graphic design programs
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Office and internet use
  • Reliable transportation
