Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington is an ELCA congregation that worships with communion at one Saturday evening and one Sunday morning service each week. The church is seeking persons of faith to lead its music programs who will encourage and facilitate participation in music for the good of the congregation and for the fulfillment of the church's mission.

Christ the King is seeking one or more persons to fill the positions of organist/accompanist, adult choir director, children’s music leader, handbell choir director, and worship band leader. Applicants may apply for one position only or for any combination of the positions. See below for job summaries for each position.

All positions will report to the lead pastor and compensation will be either part-time salaried or based on a part-time independent contractor agreement.

All positions will be required to:

  • Participate in worship planning, demonstrating a knowledge of Lutheran theology, liturgical practice, and use of music in worship.
  • Attend staff meetings as necessary.
  • Work well with others and participate collegially with staff members, pastors, and congregational leaders.
  • A full background check will be required before any positions are offered.

Duties:
Job Summary – Organist/Accompanist (approx. 10 hours/week)
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Select and provide organ/piano music for 3-4 Sunday morning services a month and all Saturday evening services, working cooperatively with the pastors to choose music for worship.
2. Select and provide organ/piano music for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
3. Accompany the adult choir at Wednesday night rehearsals and on 3-4 Sunday mornings a month from September through May.
4. Provide organ music for weddings and funerals held at the church, consulting with the wedding couples or families, if requested. (An additional stipend will be received for each service as specified in church policy.)
5. Prepare an annual budget and report detailing the current condition of the organ and pianos and specifying necessary maintenance.
 
Job Summary – Adult Choir Director (approx. 6-8 hours/week)
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Direct the adult choir in Wednesday night rehearsals toward participation in worship on 3-4 Sunday mornings per month September through May.
2. Prepare the choir for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
3. Work with the organist and pastors to arrange for and schedule appropriate music for worship during June, July, and August.
4. Actively recruit new members for the choir, providing an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care.
5. Oversee and work with the volunteers who maintain the church’s extensive choral music library.
6. Prepare an annual budget and purchase all music and music supplies for the adult choir.
 
Job Summary – Children’s Music Leader (approx. 2-4 hours/week)
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Lead children’s music activities during the Wednesday evening education rotation September through May.
2. Prepare the children to participate in worship as scheduled in consultation with the pastors, on occasional Sundays and for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
3. Encourage all children in the church to participate in music, providing an atmosphere of musical learning, faith growth, and joy in making music together.
4. Collaborate with the Children, Youth, and Family Ministry Team to determine activities, prepare an annual budget, and purchase music and music supplies for the children.
 
Job Summary – Handbell Choir Director (approx. 4-5 hours/week)
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Direct the handbell choir in one evening rehearsal per week toward participation in worship on the Sundays and festival days scheduled in consultation with the pastors.
2. Prepare the choir for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
3. Plan and prepare for a special handbell choir performance each year during Advent.
4. Actively recruit new members for the handbell choir, providing instruction as needed and maintaining an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care. Work toward adding groups as needed, i.e. a children’s handbell choir or a beginners handbell group.
5. Oversee the proper maintenance and storage of the handbells.
6. Prepare an annual budget and purchase all music and music supplies for the handbell choir.
 
Job Summary – Worship Band Leader (2-3 hours/week)
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Lead the worship band in a weekday evening rehearsal and participation in Sunday worship during 1-2 weeks per month September through May.
2. Prepare the worship band for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
3. Participate in the band as a pianist, vocalist, or guitarist.
4. Select worship band music, from the hymnal or other sources, appropriate for the vocalist(s) and instrumentalists participating.
5. Arrange parts for the instruments as needed, which may include piano, drums, guitar and bass guitar, flute, violin, saxophone, trumpet, etc.
6. Actively recruit new instrumentalists and vocalists for the worship band.
7. Oversee the set-up of the worship band space in the sanctuary, including the sound system, and maintain the equipment.
8. Prepare an annual budget and purchase all music and music supplies for the worship band.
 

Qualifications:
Organist/Accompanist (approx. 10 hours/week)
Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance or Bachelor’s Degree in Music with equivalent organ experience.
  • Knowledge of the instrument. (Our organ is a Reuter Op. 1605 with 2 manuals and 31 ranks, est. 1968 with renovations and upgrades in 1977 and 2001, including console updates.)
  • Keyboard ability sufficient to play hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments at sight.
  • Knowledge of basic music theory, including simple transpositions or harmonizing a melody.
 
Adult Choir Director (approx. 6-8 hours/week)
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music with experience in vocal music.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in choral conducting.
  • Ability to sing with accurate pitch and rhythm.
 
Children’s Music Leader (approx. 2-4 hours/week)
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and competency in working with elementary school-age children.
  • Ability to sing with accurate pitch and rhythm.
 
Handbell Choir Director (approx. 4-5 hours/week)
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music with experience in conducting or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of handbell notation and proper playing techniques.
 
Worship Band Leader (2-3 hours/week)
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music with experience with vocal and instrumental music or equivalent experience.
  • 1-2 years experience leading a worship band.
  • Knowledge of Sibelius, Finale, or similar music notation software
