Following the Money: Connecting the United Methodist Church in Mission through the Advance

January 04, 2018

“Follow the Money” has been a catchphrase for investigative journalism since the 1970s. After a little “investigation” of the contributions to the Advance (the official program of the UMC for voluntary, designated, second-mile giving) from churches in the Minnesota Conference in 2017, we can again conclude that we are good at “doing all the good we can.” Over $502,000 was given to the Advance this past year by 171 churches in our conference.

  • Seventy-four percent ($370K) went to National and International Disaster Relief, primarily in response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Some also went for the fires in California and disasters in other parts of the world. THANK YOU!
  • Seventeen missionaries in twelve countries across the world, from the U. S. to Lithuania to Mongolia to Zimbabwe, received salary support. THANK YOU!
  • Major contributions were given to projects in all part of the world, including Argentina, Belize, Haiti, India, Liberia, Sierra Leone, United States, Vietnam, and Zambia. THANK YOU!
  • Major contributions were given to projects dedicated to help alleviate world hunger through Heifer International, the Society of St. Andrew, and Sudan Famine Relief. THANK YOU!
  • Major contributions were given to Solar Ovens and Sustainable Agriculture as we seek to become better stewards of the earth. THANK YOU!
  • Major contributions were given to help support thousands of mission volunteers who go out to become the hands and feet of Jesus.  THANK YOU!
People in Minnesota have a long history of generously supporting those in need, and United Methodists are again helping to lead the way. We look forward to it happening again in “any way we can” in 2018!
