Duties:
The Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, a regional body of the global United Methodist Church, is seeking a full-time communications specialist to help tell stories of congregational breakthroughs and to equip churches for growth and vitality. The Minnesota Annual Conference office is in Minneapolis, and it serves approximately 360 congregations throughout Minnesota.
 
We are looking for a dedicated individual who has some work experience in the communications arena. As a member of a small staff, the communications specialist will have the opportunity to grow in his or her skill set and interest areas, and to learn firsthand the ins and outs of nonprofit communications. He or she will also gain experience with a wide range of tasks, including writing, online content management, e-newsletter preparation, and live streaming—and to gain some exposure to media relations, branding, and event planning. The ideal candidate will have prior experience with at least some of those tasks, but in order to have the broadest possible skill set within the communications department, preference will be given to an individual particularly skilled in:
-Video shooting/editing; and/or
-Graphic design
 
The Minnesota Conference tells stories in a variety of ways, and video has been a growing edge for us and an area of increasingly high demand (see some past videos here). Meanwhile, we produce and distribute a variety of print pieces throughout the year and want to continue to maintain the quality we’ve become known for (see a couple of our past pieces here and here). The two Minnesota Conference communicators regularly partner with two Dakotas Conference communicators to maximize skills and offerings across the area.

Duties will be partially tailored to the particular skill set that the selected individual brings to the position (ideally, video editing/production or graphic design). Other key responsibilities may include:
-Regularly update news and information and resources on conference website
-Support staff in publicizing information via the conference’s website and electronic media
-Assist conference constituents (including churches and individuals) seeking information; provide answers to their questions in a timely manner
-Seek out, report, write, and edit news and feature articles for website and electronic media
-Prepare and send weekly Minnesota Bulletin Board e-newsletter
-Obtain and prepare photos to go alongside conference news stories and columns; occasionally take photos for conference news stories and social media channels
-Create informative and engaging posts for conference social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)—and update these channels frequently throughout a three-day annual conference session
-Prepare various print and electronic materials for United Methodist constituents, some for a three-day annual conference session
-Assist with live streaming signature events offered remotely to United Methodists across Minnesota
-Assist various action teams in producing materials that help fulfill their mission
-Prepare and send “Sympathies” e-newsletter alerts following the death of clergy or their spouses
-Oversee production of other print and electronic materials as requested by director of communications
-Serve as key contact for printing company, mail house distributor, and other communication-related vendors
-Complete other tasks as assigned by director of communications

Qualifications:
-Completed bachelor’s degree; journalism or communications degree preferred
-Some work experience in the communications arena (for news outlet, company/organization, or as freelancer)
-Experience with and proven skills in video editing/production and/or graphic design
-Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat), Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint

-Strong listening skills
-Interest in learning new communications-related software
-Collaborative work style
-Commitment to the Christian faith (need not be United Methodist) and to support the organization and its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world

Compensation:
$32,000-$38,000, dependent on qualifications
