Ron Strauss is participating in the Twin Cities Open Water Half Marathon Series and is collecting money to support IMARA International, a non-profit women's shelter in Kenya, Africa. IMARA is a Conference Advance Project.
For more information regarding IMARA, please see their website: http://imarainternational.org.
In Kenya, over 13,000 teenage girls drop out of school each year because they are pregnant. Most of them never complete school, and many are forced into early marriage. IMARA fulfills its mission by operating a rescue home and training center for these mothers and their children. The home provides a safe and supportive environment where the young women can complete their high school education, and their children can receive an early childhood education program. The women will learn job and life skills that empower them to become financially independent, provide for their children, and have hope for the future.
The Twin Cities Open Water Half Marathon (TCOWHM) Series, is a series of 5 swims that totals 13.1 miles in various lakes in Minnesota throughout the summer:
-Saturday, June 25th a 1 mile swim in Lake Harriet
-Saturday, June 25th a 2 mile swim in Lake Harriet
-Saturday, July 16th a 5K (3.1 mile) swim in Lake Rebecca
-Saturday, August 13th a 5 mile in Lake Minnetonka
-Saturday, September 10th a 2 mile swim in Lake Minnetonka
My goal: to raise $1,000 for IMARA
To pledge: Individuals or groups can sponsor me in any of the following ways:
-a flat donation for the entire series
-a donation per mile that I complete (the total 13.1 miles)
-a donation per event that I complete (5 swims)
All proceeds collected will go to IMARA International to be used in supporting the mothers and babies of IMARA
Where will the money go: I am designating that the money collected from this fund raiser to go to whatever the IMARA board sees is best to support their program. I know a few of their needs include (but not limited to):
-purchase books for the children’s school curriculum
-purchase land for future expansion (presently IMARA is able to support 6 mothers and their children. Future plans include being able to support 50 women and their children)
-expansion expenses (building the new IMARA ‘village’ that will support the goal of supporting 50 mothers and their children)
