Learnings from Liz . . .

GET THE HOUSE READY!

For I don’t know how many years, we as a United Methodist Church have designated the month of September as Open House Month.  It is the time to get ready to “welcome back” all of our folk with new Sunday-school teachers, new youth programming, new choir music, new faith formation opportunities, and much more. Rally Day is the kick-off Sunday for the program year and it is filled with excitement!

I have found that Open House Month provides us with the opportunity to not only welcome folks back from the summer but to especially welcome those who are new to our community, our schools, and our neighborhood. What have we been thinking about this past summer to prepare to welcome the possibilities of the gifts of those who are not yet a part of us? How have we been preparing to let those in our neighborhood and beyond know who we are, what our faith community offers, our worship times and children/youth/adult faith formation opportunities? Dale Arendt, one of theconsultants for our annual conference, has often said that one of the purposes of the church is to always be preparing for those who have not yet come! How have you prepared?

I recently visited one of our churches where I found myself greeted at the door but once inside it was so busy that no one said a word to me. I went into the sanctuary and after worship stood in line with others to greet the pastor. No one spoke to me.  As I was standing in line though, someone from the information area caught my eye and immediately came up to me and said, "I don’t think we have met." After I told her my name, she said, "You must come and sign my book." I was given a mug with goodies and information about the church. This person said, "I know the majority of the people in this church and I keep my eye out for those I do not know so I can welcome them and introduce them to others." Wow!

She went on to say that she had been doing this for 13 years and worked not only at knowing people but being in ministry to help others learn to welcome. It was obvious she not only had a passion for people but a passion to connect them with her community of faith because it was important to her. She was making a difference!

Getting the house ready this month of September is not just about Rally Day and coming back to Sunday school and youth group and choir and faith formation classes. It is about getting ourselves ready because we have a passion for God in Jesus Christ and a passion for people to know about it!

Bishop Michael Coyner, in his book The Race to Reach Out, says that “ministry is about people, it s about caring for people, it is about a yearning for all people to discover what it means to be a disciple of Christ in their journey toward God. It is about caring for those newcomers and eagerly desiring to see their lives find fulfillment and are willing to adapt our church’s ministry to meet their needs” (p.xiii). Getting our house ready involves so much more.

I hope that as we get our house and ourselves ready this month to welcome back all of our church community that we will make it a special mission to greet everyone who comes through our door. And if they are visiting for the first or third time you will see to it that they have someone to sit with during worship (maybe you!) and that you will invite them personally to fellowship coffee. Reaching out to new people is the most transforming experience we are afforded by the Christ who always welcomes us. May you be a part of what God is blessing in this month and in the months to come!!

Blessings . . .

liz

United Methodist Communications (UMCom) needs your help! UMCom has launched a massive promotional campaign to update the United Methodist Church's Find-A-Church website. I received notice that 65% of our Twin Cities churches had done this. Great! It is important that we keep these pages up to date so that when newcomers seek a church in the Twin Cities, they will find up-to-date, accurate information about your church. Please go to the Rethink Church site and click on "Update your church's ministries" (on the left) or visit the Find-A-Church site and click on "Update your page now" (on the left) to check to make sure your church's information is up to date. You'll need to have your church's GCFA number, which is printed in the Journal. Thanks! Liz

Rethink Church Training: Oct. 17, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Messiah UMC. The national UM program for inviting and welcoming. $40/church; $10/person for lunch. Contact United Methodist Communications at ( 888) 278-4862 for more information. Register online here.

Church Planting 101: Oct. 26-27, Brunswick UMC (6122 42nd Ave. N., Crystal). For churches sensing they might like to start a new worship service, clergy discerning where they best thrive in ministry, and those interested in multi-site ministries or church planting. $50/person. Register online here.

Investing in Congregations: The Minnesota Annual Conference is investing in those congregations that have the potential, capacity, and commitment to reach new people. It will give grants in 2010 to congregations with the will to engage in risk-taking, innovative ministries, reaching new communities and holy experimentation. This grant is not a long-term subsidy for ongoing ministry, but rather seed money for a new venture. You can find the application on the conference home page under "Quick Links." Applications are due to Rev. Cindy Gregorson by October 30.

Structures of Care for One Another

World Communion Sunday: Oct. 4. This special offering taken by churches around the world supports scholarships for students preparing for Christian leadership in our world. It is a great time to invite people of many nationalities to participate in worship, dress the altar in a way that represents different cultures of the world, serve communion with bread from different parts of the world, and incorporate more than one language into the Sunday worship litany.

District Trainings for Church Leaders

Our pastors and leaders, along with our superintendent, are to create intentional ministry plans about how to catch God's vision for each Minnesota United Methodist church and the steps needed to begin to implement their unique paths.

Select a date (listed below) that fits your church's schedule; bring leaders, people who are passionate, curious, or skeptical about setting a course; and prepare by looking at the demographic information at MissionInsite. If your church already has a strategic ministry plan, please come and share a story of the difference it's making for your ministry.

Contact the district office with your team's preferred training date.

  • Sat., Oct. 3, 9:30 a.m. at Good Samaritan UMC (Edina)
  • Sun., Oct. 4, 2:30 p.m. at Eden Prairie UMC
  • Sat., Oct. 10, 9:30 a.m. at Arlington Hills UMC (Maplewood)
  • Mon., Oct. 19, 6:30 p.m. at Minnehaha UMC (Minneapolis)
  • Sat., Nov. 7, 9:30 a.m. at Fridley UMC
  • Mon. Nov. 9, 6:30 p.m. at Faith UMC (West Saint Paul)

Someone said, "If you don't know where you're headed, any road will do." We hope our churches and pastors aren't living life that way! Because we live in a new day and time of social networking, and a culture where only 17 percent of people show up for church on Sunday, it's time to "rethink" church.
