Learnings from Liz . . .
"LEADING YOUR CONGREGATION TRAINING"
LEADERSHIP
"Leadership remains one of the most relevant aspects of the organizational context. However, defining leadership has been challenging and definitions can vary depending on the situation. According to Ann Marie E. McSwain, Assistant Professor at Lincoln University, 'leadership is about capacity: the capacity of leaders to listen and observe, to use their expertise as a starting point to encourage dialogue between all levels of decision-making, to establish processes and transparency in decision–making, to articulate their own values and visions clearly but not impose them. Leadership is about setting and not just reacting to agendas, identifying problems, and initiating change that makes for substantial improvement rather than managing change.'" (Source: Online Wikipedia)
TRAINING
"The term training refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. In addition to the basic training required for an occupation or profession, it is recognized today that there is the need to continue training beyond initial qualifications: to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life. People within many professions and occupations may refer to this sort of training as professional development. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, or performance." (Source: Online Wikipedia)
CONGREGATION
A congregation is a gathering of people who come together to worship and live out their mission as community of believers. For us in the United Methodist Church we are a community of true believers under Jesus Christ and our task is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
RETHINK CHURCH
"Powered by the Holy Spirit, 'Rethink Church' serves as a catalyst that moves the United Methodist Church and those we hope to reach, into dialogue and ultimately into transformational, collaborative action. What if Church were a verb? What would it look like?"
(UMCOM)
On March 14 at Brooklyn UMC, from 2 to 6 p.m., the Twin Cities District will be having its annual Leading Your Congregation Training. This event is for members of Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committees, church council leadership, finance and administration staff and volunteers, pastors, and local church lay leaders.
As we take the steps to "rethink" church today, we find that the way we "used to" do ministry no longer addresses the communities we are a part of. The landscape of ministry is changing daily and leaders, training, and even our congregations are being called to change. What is "leadership?" What is "training?" What would our "congregations" look like embracing the leadership and training opportunities to take the next steps to move in exciting, vital and new directions?
I hope that you will bring as many of your leaders as you can to the Leading Your Congregation Training and be a part of what it means to "rethink" church! See you then!
Blessings!

Someone said, "If you don't know where you're headed, any road will do." We hope our churches and pastors aren't living life that way! Because we live in a new day and time of social networking, and a culture where only 17 percent of people show up for church on Sunday, it's time to "rethink" church.
