"PATHWAY TO RENEWAL…"

For the past year conversations across the Twin Cities District churches have used words like "merger, re-birth, yoked, cooperative parish, partnership, re-think, and renewal." Many of our congregational leaders have been involved in looking again at their vision and mission statements, participating in Natural Church Development, setting new goals and objectives as they work on their congregational ministry plans. Some of our congregations have used coaches to help them re-strategize, re-think, and re-look at their ministry and what God is calling them to do and be in such a time as this. Some congregations have taken leaps of faith to get outside their walls and start ministries in places one would not have thought possible even five years ago. We are entering into a new and emerging landscape of ministry which tells us we cannot do ministry like we used to if we are going to reach new people, impact and transform people with the gospel of Jesus Christ and sustain ourselves.

As I think about what is before us I cannot help but remember clearly those words of God to the Israelites in Deuteronomy (chapter 30) that say: "I am giving you the choice between life and death... choose LIFE! Choose life! Love the Lord your God. Obey and be faithful and you will live long!" Okay, I paraphrased it a little but God has and will always urge us to choose life! It is God’s way. But as we find ourselves and our ministry in this 21st century though, choosing life requires change!

What change looks like and how it happens will be different for each of us. But whatever pathway we take to begin that process of change it seems, at least to me, that it will be "renewing." I often think that this is what "re-think" church is about.

Dan Smith and Mary Sellon's book Pathway to Renewal,is a resource that has provided some help along the way, at least for me. They state the tough issues of change and they also provide guidance for hope of what can be. It does take a lot of work this task of change and renewal but without it nothing will change or happen. I want to share just a couple of things from their book which takes a hard look at why a church declines and yet they state some things that apply to all of us.

Marks of Health:

"When we assess a congregation's vitality, we look for three marks of inner health:

  • Continued spiritual formation as an essential for everyone rather than an activity pursued by some
  • Relationships among people that embody the kin-dom of God; relationships that are honoring, forgiving, loving, caring, mutual and generative
  • A deep, pervasive concern for the temporal and spiritual well-being of those beyond the doors of the church – a concern that manifests in action

Marks of Decline:

  • Growing the church rather than witnessing to faith
  • Running the church rather than forming disciples
  • Being people-led rather than being Spirit-led
  • Participating in mission projects without having a mission
  • Fixing rather than creating
These can at certain times, serve a congregation and contribute to health but when these become the primary focus, the congregation is in trouble." (pgs. 19-20)

As you are in the process of working on your congregational ministry plans, these may be some things to think about. What I do know is that we are being called to renew, revitalize, and re-think church and our ministry! Choose Life!!… for it is in Life that God works best!!

Blessings…
Liz

Episocopal Area Reduction Announcement

From the North Central Jurisdiction College of Bishops

Dakotas and Minnesota to become new Episcopal Area in 2012
By Matt Kuzma

CHICAGO, IL January 26, 2010 – The United Methodist Church (UMC) North Central Jurisdiction (NCJ) College of Bishops announced its decision today on how it will reduce the number of episcopal areas from 10 to nine in 2012. Effective September 1, 2012, the Dakotas Annual Conference and Minnesota Annual Conference will be served by only one bishop, but maintain their current boundaries and structures. No other boundaries of annual conferences or episcopal areas will be affected by this decision.

The reorganization comes as a result of action at the 2008 UMC General Conference. Four of the five jurisdictions in the United States are each required to phase out one episcopal area by 2012.
"We regret that financial considerations have forced us to make this decision," said Bishop Jonathan D. Keaton, president of the NCJ College of Bishops. "Regardless, we know that nothing will prevent us from our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."

In exploring this issue, the NCJ College of Bishops consulted with the NCJ Committee on Episcopacy and considered input from lay and clergy leaders at the most recent Jurisdictional Conference in 2008.

"We will be forming a joint transition team in the next couple of weeks to begin our planning," said Bishop Sally Dyck of the Minnesota Area.

Bishop Deborah Kiesey of the Dakotas Area said that she hoped that all United Methodists in the jurisdiction will support each other during this transition. The bishops will request an immediate grant of $40,000 from the NCJ Mission Council to cover initial transition costs as well as ongoing support for the conferences forming the new episcopal area.

Someone said, "If you don't know where you're headed, any road will do." We hope our churches and pastors aren't living life that way! Because we live in a new day and time of social networking, and a culture where only 17 percent of people show up for church on Sunday, it's time to "rethink" church.
